Residential area air quality is directly influenced by urban ambient air quality, while urban air pollution is caused mainly by traffic tail gas and the emission of industrial waste gas. Especially when the pollution source is located near the residential area, the effect of the waste air on ambient air quality will directly influence people's health. For most residential houses in China, natural ventilation is the most popular ventilating mode, which makes the outdoor air quality directly influence the indoor air quality. So researches of diffusion of industrial waste gas and its impact on ambient air quality are important and necessary for control and improve people's life.Air quality of a residential community, which is near a waste combustion power plant, is researched through field measurement and computational simulation in this paper. Several pollutants concentration is measured in the surrounding residential field. CFD numerical simulation software is used to simulate the horizontal and vertical concentration distribution and the influence of chimney height, distance and wind velocity on the concentration distribution. Simulation results show that as the increase of the distantce from emission source, the pollutant concentration raises gradually to a peak value at a certain point, and then begain to decline, so there is a best distance from emission source make the concentration in object area the lowest value. Vertical concentration distribution show the similar trend as that of horizontal which makes the higher floor owner are exposed to higher pollutant concentration. Larger the wind speed is, the point of highest concentration in horizontal direction is farther, and the concentration is loer that of smaller wind speed. Wind tunnel experiments are carried out and the results are well accord with the simulation results.Impact of outdoor pollution on indoor air quality through windows and doors is also researched experimentally. The results show that different natural ventilation type lead to different air exchange rate, consecutively different increase rate of the indoor pollutant. Besides, indoor/outdoor pollutant concentration relationship could be researched by the similarity concept of"degree days".
