Cam mechanisms are the key parts in machine devices. They have close structure and reliable performance, which enable strong adaptability in realizing intermission, indexing, greater rise, and other complex movements. Cam mechanisms have perfect kinematic and dynamical characteristics, which are supported by accurate cam component. Cam is the core part of cam mechanism, and cam itself must have higher manufacture accuracy.For the cylindrical groove-cam with translating roller follower, the dissertation derived the practical profile equation with the theory of conjugating surfaces, transformation matrix operator methods and differential geometry. The curve equation of tool center path on the spreading plane and the equation of profile machined by tool were given with the unequal diameter 2-coordinate machining method often used in machining.Applying the mathematical computational software—MATLAB, for unequal diameter 2-coordinate machining, the theoretical machining error of profile machined by tool was analysed using an example. The theoretical machining error was evaluated by three methods—error analysis of corresponding points'distance, error analysis of normal distance and error analysis of the shortest distance. It can be concluded that the method of error analysis of the shortest distance is the best one to embody machining error, and that it is of important theoretical meaning and practical application value. Corresponding points'distance is not the shortest distance between the profile machined by tool and practical profile. Neither is normal distance. And the equation of contact-line and its curve were derived with the unequal diameter 2-coordinate machining method.Machining principle of double envelope method was presented simply. And the direction of development of double envelope method was brought forward.
