The Relationship Between Minimalism And Furniture Design

Furniture is the necessity of human life in civilized society, which always influences people's thinking and activities. It's design is affected mainly by two factors, namely science and arts. The development of science help furniture designers use scientific theory, modern materials, new equipments and technological methods to meet modern needs; while arts plays far-reaching repercussions to furniture design. It can be said that the furniture itself, which can show contemporary culture and can be provided for the public to enjoy art, is a work of art itself. Thanks to concise form, highly functional and rational design concept, Minimalism, as the current mainstream in design style at home and abroad, accommodates with the development of whole society and the life of people, and its trend is consistent and strong.Based on this phenomenon, this article deeply introduces and summarizes the birth and development of Minimalist Art, and the specific artistic performances in pure art and design areas. Then, it analyzes the ideological roots, the formation and developing process of Minimalism furniture design. By researching Minimalist designers' ideas, contestations and typical furniture works, the author sums up the further furniture design features and design elements. At last, the article suggests introducing Minimalist design concepts to the Chinese furniture design area. By considering the developing status of Chinese furniture and characteristics of traditional Chinese furniture, the article gives some theoretic suggestions to "Chinese furniture Minimalism".
