With the gradual growing use and enhancing application level of CAD technology, the increasing demands of users to the CAD software are put forward. At the same time we have to face the fact that no any CAD software can completely meet all the user's needs. As a CAD/CAE/CAM software, UG has very strong functions. But sometime its efficiency is low in design and it needs users having high skill for the use of some applications as the lacking of related professional design tools. In the stamping process design of the sheet part, the determination of stamping direction, which affected the design of binder and addendum surfaces and further affected the decision of the consequent stamping processes, is very crucial. Choosing different stamping direction may result to different stamping die structures and different sheet part quality. So, how to quickly and reasonably determine stamping direction, both avoiding die-lock area and making forming easy and simplifying die structures not only are concerned by stamping process digitalization and CAD technology, but also have profound significance in shortening the time of die manufacture, enhancing efficiency of production and cutting down costs. In this paper, based on the secondary development technology of UG, the module of tipping is developed to determine the stamping direction and check the die lock areas of complex sheet parts through the using of UG/Open Menuscript, UG/Open UIStyler, UG/Open API, Visual C++6.0. The developed module, which can be extended and easily transplanted, combined with integrate environment of UG shows a good interface, and provided a efficient digitalization tool for the stamping process design of sheet parts. The developed module tested by some specific examples shows that it can determine stamping direction of complex sheet parts in UG environment, not only avoiding the die lock areas, but having some help in shortening time of die design and enhancing quality of die design.
