The ecological footprint method is a biophysical assessment method of the humanappropriation of ecological capacity, for measuring the ecological imperative ofsustainability.Human consume the products and services of nature; every one of us has animpact on the earth.Does the human load stay within global carrying capacity? The concept ofecological footprint has been desighed to answer this question, and is based on theunderstanding that every individual human appropriates a share of the productive andassimilative capacity of the biosphere. An ecological footprint corresponds to this exclusivebiologically productive area that a defined population uses for all its resource requirementsand wastes, and is expressed in terms of bio-productive area that a defined population uses forall its resoruce requirements and wastes, and is expressed in terms of bio-productivespace,with world-average productivity.Humanity's footprint or its aggregate ecologicaldemand can only temporarily exceed the productive and assimilative capacity of the biospherewithout liquidating and weakening the natural on which humanity dependsfundamentally.Therefor, accounting tools for quantifying humanity's use of nature are essentialfor overall assessments of human impact as well as for planning specific steps towards asustainable future. The ecological footprint is a function of population and per capital materialconsumption. The calculation of the model requires incorporation of relevantincome.prevailingvalues,social-cultural factors and ecosystem functions in the estimate would lead to intractableinformation and data-processing problems.Estimating the ecological footprint of a definedpopulation is a multistage process.1997, Wackernagel has calculated the ecological footprint of 52 countries and regions inthe world in《Ecological Footprint of Nations》[3 ],the result of the study indicated that theecological footprint of USA is the biggest , per capita 10.9 hm2 , Bangladesh is the lowest, percapita only hm2; The domestic scholar calculated and analyzed to the ecological footprint ofour country [17 ], the result shows: In 1997 of China per capita 1.2 hm2, it was only 0.8 hm2that the per capita ecology bore the weight of strength, the per capita ecological deficit was0.4 hm2.Urbanization and industrialized process are accelerated in recent years in Kuanchengdistrict in Changchun city, the area demand is strengthened, but in the urbanization process, can't gain the transient development of economy in order to sacrifice the ecological capital. Inorder to check erroneous ideas at the outset, The essay adopt the sectional method, divide itinto two ecological districts, according to the ecological footprint theory, divide land type into the six types, cultivated land, forest land, meadow, building site, fossil fuel land and waterareas . It is the basic data to fetch the statistical data for 2003, 2004, 2005 three years, according to the ecological footprint model, calculate and analyze to ecological footprint andecological capacity of Kuancheng district from two pieces of yardstick of time and space. Theresult indicates, the ecological deficit of Kuancheng district is relatively large at present, theecosystem is unsafe, present development is unsustainable.
