Coal is the basis of the national economic and social development. China is mainly onunderground coal mining, with complex production environmental conditions and a great deal ofinsecure factors. To ensure the safety of workers, it is necessary to learn the exploitationenvironment, for example security managers need to understand all the potential hazards in thework area; coal miners have to know some safety knowledge and safety prevention awareness.So people need to take safety education, life-saving training and so on. While limited byvarious environmental factors, human beings could not take the training in practice, in whichpeople can stay in the real environment. And sometimes the real environment is unsafe, or thereis no way to provide such environment (such as building is still on design). Therefore asimulation of real environment is needed to support staff feel the reality.Thus, with the development of visual simulation technology, combine VR technology andsimulation theory and apply them to coal safety management will be effective. Accordingly thestudy of virtual reality technology used in coal safety management is discussed in this paper witha view to benefit.Virtual reality technology is senior human-computer interaction technology, that is, usingartificial intelligence, computer graphics, human-computer interfaces, multimedia, computernetworks and electronics, machinery, and other high-techs, to simulate human being's seeing,hearing, moving in specific environment. Its technical characteristics are reflected mainly in fouraspects: multi-sensory; immersion; interaction; autonomy. In short, virtual reality is a 3Dinformation space constituted by a variety of media. And its basic features are interaction andimmersion.The 3D visualization modeling technology of geological as the foundation, the virtual realitysimulation technology as a means of coal mine safety virtual reality simulation, is the frontiers tostudy geology and the coal mine safety research, and also an important component of 3D-GIStechnology. Its study can be added to mine safety technology and theory and expand its field ofapplication. And it will also promote the development of geology simulation technology.This paper analyses the history and actuality of the advanced 3D mining software in westerncountries as well as analyzing the basic theories of visualization technology and spatial modelingtechniques, and analyses and summarize the techniques,which include science virtualize,geological lay and 3D geo-object modeling, a coal mine safety virtual reality and simulation system was designed and its key implementation technologies were discussed, such as thevisualization of the geo-surface, the techniques of the 3D spatial model, the intergred solution forthe laneway modeling and the underground scene, the simulation models for coal mine safety.Based on OpenGL, the system integrated spatial database techniques and modern simulationtechniques, 2D constrained/unconstrained triangulation techniques, 3D constrained triangulationtechniques, 3D geo-object modeling based on different generalize tri-prism modeling techniques,coal laneway rebuild design based on parameterization, and irregular solid modeling techniquesbased on linear octree coding. The original ideas of the research are as follows:(1) A coal mine safety virtual reality and simulation system was designed, which consist ofOpenGL virualization program frame, a 3D spetial geologic database, an integrated solutions forsurface modeling and 3D geologic spatial Modeling, and an integered solutions for lanewayrebuild and the environment framework, and an integered solutions for coal safety simulationmodels.(2)Based on analysising the current 3D spatial Modeling techniques, a solution for 3Dgeo-object modeling was designed, this model make use of the geologic information such as dirlldata, physics explore data. Logical data model which includes the fundamental elements and thedata structure based on generalize tri-prism modeling was designed. The paper invented thealgorithm for generalize tri-prism modeling whick make use of the real drill data, and it alsoinvented a rational solution for the special problems during the modeling. and then, the thinkingabout the modeling and the technical route was brought forward, meanwhile, the key techniqueshas been given a thorough research.(3) Aiming at the complexity of the laneway and the underground scene, it designed aintergred solution for the laneway modeling and the underground scene.Based on the lead of thelaneway and the regular curve modeling techniques, it anlysed the geometric parameter andestablish a coherent math parameter model for the laneway simulation model.the system utilizesthe BSP tree to manage the underground scene,whcic includes the equipments modeling. andthen, the client can make use of the center line of the laneway to cruise.(4) The paper analysis the coal safet typical models by the techniques of the systemsanalysis and simulation analysis and established the simulation model.based on the map theoryand the net solution theory, it established the simulation for the ventilation system and set up thesystem constructiuon, which provide powerful technical support for the ventilation safety; Basedon the artificial neural network theory, it established the predicition model of coal and gasoutburst and set up the system construction, which provide powerful technical support for thepredicition model of coal and gas outburst.Through absorbing the advantages of the same existing systems both abroad and homealong with some improvements, the system is featured by a reasonable system configuration andrelative complete functions, which gives an outline for the development of the coal mine safetyvirtual reality and simulation system. The key technologies have been applied during softwaredevelopment, which proved to be very effective.
