Research status for the persistent phosphors of rare earth ions doped alkali earthaluminates was systemically summarized in this paper. The synthesis of ultra-finephosphors, surface encapsulation of phosphor and its application in water-bornecoatings were studied and investigated, respectively.A new type of long lasting phosphors with a general formula SrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+was prepared by combustion method at lower temperature. TEM images indicated thatthe phosphors was needle-like with a length of more than 100nm and a diameterbelow 30nm. Influence of furnace temperature, concentration of H3BO3 and urea, etc.on the properties of the sample were studied. The structure of the samples wasinvestigated by XRD. The excitation and emission spectra, afterglow characteristicsof the material were measured by F-2500 fluorescence spectrophotometer. The resultsindicated that doping of H3BO3 and Dy3+ could improve powders' luminescence andprolong afterglow life of this long after glow phosphor material.Technologies of inorganic encapsulation and organic encapsulation were used forthe surface modification of SrAl 2O 4:Eu2+, Dy3+ phosphors in this paper. Through theanalysis of TEM and IR images, it is proved that a dense film of SiO2 on phosphor isproduced. The water-resistance and persistent luminescent properties indicated thatthe encapsulated phosphors had better water-resistance performance and maintainedgood persistent photoluminescence properties. The results of stock stability indicatedthat phosphor with organic encapsulation is better than phosphor with inorganicencapsulation in a hydrous environment.The water-bone coatings were manufactured by using the encapsulatedphosphors as pigments and the acrylic latex as the binder, and the performances of thecoatings were studied in this paper. The results showed that phosphors ratio, differentblending way of phosphors, its surface modification status played important roles onmechanic performances of coating film, persistent luminescence of coating film, stockstability of coatings, water resistance of coating film respectively. The superlong afterglow luminescent coating was prepared by adding properSrAl2O4:Eu2+, Dy3+ powders and other aids into acrylic emulsion. The bestprescription of the coating was obtained. The properties of luminescent coating weredetermined. The factors which affected the coating properties were discussed.
