Improving Crease-resistance Of Silk Fabric With Microbial Transglutaminase(MTG) Treatment

In this paper, the present anti-crease theories and methods are summarized at first. The catalyzing mechanism of microbial transglutaminase (MTG) is discussed, the academic basis for treating silk fabric with MTG is analyzed, and research & applications of MTG in wool modification is also introduced.At first, MTG is used to treat silk fabric solely, so as to comprehend its working condition and effect on silk. In the meanwhile of emphasizing changes in dry crease recovery angle, meanwhile bending capability is also tested. Besides, FT-IR Spectrum is applied to analyze influence on secondary structure of fibroin, and scan electron microscope (SEM) is used to show the changes on silk surface. It is indicated by the experiments that MTG finish confers certain improvement to silk's crease-resistance. When treated in 5% MTG solution 40℃for 90 minutes, increase of crease recovery angle comes to 12%; bending test also shows increase of bending rigidity and decrease of bending lagging moment, which also means improvement in crease-resistance.However, effect of solo MTG finish is not very ideal. On this basis, compound finish is adopted to improve anti-crease effect, other performances such as break strength, break elongation, whiteness, shrinkage and wicking height are also considered. Comparison of hydroperoxide, protease, plasma and ultrasonic pretreatments indicates that plasma endows little improvement, hydroperoxide and protease bring serious strength loss, none but compound treatment of ultrasonic with MTG confers the much better effect. The scheme of 30min pretreatment of 59KHz ultrasonic followed with treatment of 5%(o.w.f) MTG, 40℃,80min turned to be the best. Not only crease recovery angle has been increased by 40.5°, amounting 17.4% improvement, but also other performances have been improved to certain degree. Besides, SEM pictures shows that certain damage is brought to fiber treated by all these compound treatment, and the trauma on samples treated by ultrasonic is much more tender.
