With the development of science and technology and needs of high-tech, precision and ultra-precision processing technology plays an increasingly important role in industrial production. Ultra-precision machining has become one of the most critical and effective techniques in industrial production for decades. Closely connecting with the Doctor Foundation subject of Hebei province, the structure of ultra-precision lathe was designed with the aid of the science of piezoelectric material, flexure hinge theory and virtual prototype technology; Then a 3D model of the lathe was set up; And at last, the kinematics and cutting force simulation was proceeded on basic of the lathe modeling. The creative work has been completed as follows:◆With the aid of modular-design thought,a miniaturized ultra-precision lathe was designed, which was based on some key components,such as electric spindle and piezoelectric ceramic micro-positioning platform.◆A micro-feeding tool holder was designed based on piezoelectric ceram and flexible hinge,which took piezoelectric ceram as its power supply, and flexible hinge as its deformation component. The linear analysis experiments were done with the micro-feeding tool holder. As a result, a displacement-voltage curve was got that laid a foundation for linear driving of tool holder.◆With the virtual prototype simulation technology and Pro/ENGINEER software, the 3-D solid modeling of lathe parts have been established. According to traditionally assemblage type, virtual assembly and kinematics simulation has been carried out, and interference detection in assembly processes has been tested.◆With the VC++ development environment,in order to predigest the design of the virtual lathe,OBJ data file has been converted into OpenGL. The cutting experiment of the designed lathe has been done,and the simulation of cutting force was proceeded in virtue of double buffer technique and timer technique and so on.The results of simulation and experiments indicated that the feeding resolution of micro-positioning system could reach 0.01μm and the linear displacement change also could reach 4.58μm;So the lathe could achieve submicron-sized accuracy. At last, the paper summarized the researches and achievements, and proposed some suggestions and ideas in the next step of the study.
