The sand production in Z43 Block of Jiangsu Oilfield was serious and affected the normal oil production greatly. Since 1999, a series of sand control technology was applied,but the effect was not satisfactory because of the complexity of characteristics of oilfield and adaptability of sand control technology. In order to improve the efficiency and adaptability of sand control technology, it was necessary to seek an effective approach based on the specific conditions of the oil block. In this paper, the mechanism of sand production was studied through analyzing the formation characteristics of well in Z43 oil block, and the relationship of sand production with water cut, production pressure and other factors was studied. Moreover sand production prediction was developed. Empirical methods such as acoustic travel time and sand production index were adopted to predict whether the sand was produced and the degree of sand production. Critical drawdown pressure was determined by the stress analysis. By laboratory core simulation test of sand production, the impacts of fluid flow rate and water content on sand production were evaluated, which guided the determination of work parameters and sand control time. Aiming at the various completion methods of sand control, the model to select the optimum sand control method was constructed based on both the adaptabilities of sand control methods and economic effort. Furthermore, by laboratory test, the optimum sand control method was chosen, the sand control technique was optimized, and the well fluid was selected. The application in fact proved that the model matched the practical situation well, the success ratio of sand control in Z43 oil block was improved, the workover fee was reduced, the pump inspection period was extended and the economic benefit was obtained.
