Along with development of sealing technology, the normal floating-ring seal adopted in compressor appear more and more problems. Relative to technology of dry gas seal, the floating-ring seal has less stability on working, more leaking out amount, higher cost and greater pollution on environment.The GB501 (propylene compressor) and GB601 (ethene compressor) used in Tianjin petroleum chemical & ethene factory are turbo centrifugal compressors which were produced by HITACHI Corp. in 1993. These compressors are key refrigerating machine and adopt the floating-ring seal. Because of the hard controlling on floating-ring seal, the large amount of leak in inner floating-ring is easier to take place. This can degrade the quality of lube oil, influence the efficiency of subsequently heater and consequently lower the unit refrigerating amount and efficiency. For that purpose, the necessity of improving the seal was discussed in this paper through analyzing the actual working behaviors of many compressors.Base on studying the home and foreign reference, the technology calculations are performed and the improved seal type is determined in this paper. The technology improving plan is formulated according to the investing scale and original structure of machinery body. For none destroy on original structure of machinery body, the seal type used on the GB501 (propylene compressor) and GB601 (ethene compressor) is changed from the floating-ring seal to the TM02D type of serial dry gas seal which has second order air admission. The process gas of compressor's outlet can be used as first order seal gas and second order seal gas and separating gas can use nitrogen. For the assurance of reliability on seal, the detailed maintaining plan and operating rule are give to guide the normal examining& repairing and operating. Through the evaluation on the improved compressor for two months, the conclusion could be obtained that the improved seal can work stably and all technology index can reach the designing request, so it achieve the anticipative effect.
