In this paper, the cationic starch modified flocculant (St-DMDAAC-AM) was synthesized successfully from natural starch, the solicitation medicament of nitric acid cerium ammonium by the water solution polymerization and the craft was successfully applied on the industrialization production. The basic disciplinarian of the graft copolymerization of starch by nitric acid cerium ammonium was studied using single factor experiment in this paper, the effects of the solicitation medicament dosage, the reaction temperature, the monomer concentration and the monomer/starch ratio on the percentage of grafting, the grafting efficiency, the monomer conversion ratio and the graft copolymerization production etc were studied detailedly and found out the optimize reaction condition of getting the best performance index. The experiment result indicated that the percentage of grafting G, the grafting efficiency E, the monomer conversion ratio C and the molecular weight M increased at the first period, then dropped as the adding of the Ce4+ dosage and the experiment temperature; The percentage of grafting G and the monomer conversion ratio C increased as the monomer concentration and the ratio(AM: DMDAAC) increasing; the grafting efficiency E and the molecular weight M increased as the monomer ratio(AM: DMDAAC) increasing, increased at the first period and then dropped as the monomer concentration increasing. The relationship of the flocculation performance and the dosage of graft copolymerizetion was studied and the flocculation process mechanism was discussed by the experiment process of the Hanyang Paper Mill, Wuhan petrifaction refinery, Henan oil field waste water containing sulfur (the second oil extraction) and the flue water. The result showed that the flocculation performance of the modified starch flocculant was better than Japanese PHP's and CPAM's, and approached the France CPAM's. The structure and property of the modified starch flocculant was characterized by FTIR.The result of the product test indicated that this technology can meet the demand of the industry production.
