Flexibility, intelligence and network present are becoming the key characteristics of CNC technology in the field of modern manufacturing. These illustrate the trends of CNC system: from special and close structure to general and open architecture; from single function to integrated and complex function; from only being controlled positively to being intelligent and from isolated controlling to network-connecting. The research is developed based on a homemade open CNC system with flexible characteristic of re-usage and re-configuration, with which, database management, monitoring and network communication module are developed to this system to meet the requirements.1) Implementation of embedded database in CNC system. There are plentiful parameters in CNC system which are the precondition for the running of machine tool. A new scheme on data management based on Access database in CNC system is presented, which overcomes the defects in general data management method of text file format adopted by CNC system in use. As a result, data management measure based on embedded database is effective, which in turn improves greatly the performance of the CNC system.2) Integrating data communication and status monitoring unit in CNC system. Network communication and status monitoring are premise of CNC system with intelligence, tele-manufacturing and remote diagnosis. Considering the fact that most CNC systems only provide serial communication mode, which is limited by distance and speed in data transmission, USB and network based communication mode are developed. That means, communication based on RS232 protocol, USB protocol, TCP/IP protocol and FTP protocol are all realized in the CNC system. What's more, status monitoring unit based on multi-CPU strategies is integrated with CNC system. In so doing, manufacturing process control and machine status monitoring can be performed by the CNC system alone. Practical experiments prove that these methods are feasible and the system is able to perform information transmission conveniently.
