Food safety is a systemic project, and food packaging safety is an important part. Now, polymer materials are increasingly used as food packaging. In order to change their properties and functions, low molecular weight materials are added, these materials have strong mobility. Thus when the food packaging contacts with food for a long time, the chemicals in packaging may interact with food by permeating, absorbing, dissolving and so such process, after that the "Indirect additives" will migrate into food, and will have such-and-such effects on foods, for example, changing the composition of food, changing flavor or color of food, even may be of great health risk to human beings. At present, food packaging safety attracts attention of public more and more, and the influence on foods' decay because of migration between packaging and foods has be a very important factor of food safety. As a result, it is necessary to investigate the migration of chemicals in food packaging to foods. The migration test may be divided into such portions as follow:This whole investigation was mainly based on two kinds of food packaging, PVC and PET materials. This paper includes six sections: The first chapter reviewed the problem of present food packaging safety, the chemicals in PVC and PET packaging, the regulations related to food contact materials in different nations and the development of food simulants, the advancement related to the pretreatment methods, to contact conditions, to determination conditions of analyses and to the mathematic modeling in this field. And at last summarized the main content researched and the creativity of this study. The second chapter compared the overall migration of chemicals from PVC into different food simulants, investigated the change tendency of migration with the time and temperature changed. The third chapter developed a new method of determining the phthalate acids in PVC materials, compared the traditional with the advanced extraction methods of phthalate acids, and got the conclusion that the ASE was the best and fastest method of them. Further optimized the parameter of ASE, and compared the concentrating method for simulants, optimized the conditions of HPLC.The fourth chapter researched the specific migration of phthalate acids from PVC into food simulants. Six kinds of phthalate acids were forbidden by European commission, however, due to the limitation of PVC material in market, only PVC film contain DBP,DEHP,DNOP was investigated. The test compared the specific migration in different simulants, analyzed the migration tendency with the time and temperature changed, and compared the specific migration results with the overall migration together. The fifth chapter developed a fast method of determining four kinds of antioxidants BHT,BHA,Irganox1076,Irganox1010 simultaneously. Based on the PVC material, investigated the specific migration of the four kinds of antioxidants, the aimed antioxidants can not be detected in the PVC film available in market, compared the recovery of different kinds of antioxidants when spiked in the blank sample. The sixth chapter developed a method of determining the terephthalate acid in food simulants, and investigated the migration of terephthalate acid from PET to food simulants. This work was supported by Advanced Technology Industrial Project in college of Shanxi province (No.20041030), and by Science and Technology Research Project (No.2007031082) of Shanxi province.
