In this paper an overall and systematic study of rock bolt plate was done through theoretical analysis, laboratory testing, numerical simulation and field testing. The mechanical properties of present rock bolt plates were analyzed, the rock bolt plate was optimized from sizes, thickness, arch height and so on. Its mechanical properties were simulated in following situation: face-contact, quadrilateral bearing, four-point bearing, three-point bearing and so on. The action on pre-stress diffusion of rock bolt, and the affect on controlling the surrounding rock between bolts were analyzed. Gauged plate was made, the mechanical properties of the plate were tested in laboratory. The field testing was done in an underground coal mine, the relation between plate force and distance to heading face was analyzed.The features of stress distribution in plates under different bearing states have been basically understood, the rational parameters of plates have been obtained, the understanding on supporting mechanism of plates has been widened, the interaction between plates and surrounding rock has been deepened, and the theoretical and technical supporting has been provided for effective and rational application of plates.
