Corrosion brings a huge loss to global economy, around 1%- 5% of GDPs in various countries, according to a survey. The loss is 6 times of that caused by natural disasters (earthquake, windstorm, flood, fire and so on). In our country, it takes more than 4% of GDP. Especially in petrochemical industry, corrosion severely threatens the lives and properties.As the economy loss and casualties rise sharply, the protection and monitor of corrosion became more and more important. The corrosion online monitoring system, as a new technology that can monitor the parameters related to the equipment corrosion rate and the rate itself without influencing the normal operation of the system, has been developed fast in such background. The research and application of this technology have been a key issue in domestic petrochemical industry.This paper will introduce a new middleware-based remote corrosion online monitoring system basing on the study on the corrosion machanism and protection methods. It uses a multilayer distributed structure consist of data acquisition layer, middleware application service layer and data release layer.The practical application in some China Petroleum Refining Factory shows that, this system has successfully integrated the network with the corrosion online monitoring, realized the remote monitoring function. The system can hold a long-term continues monitoring on the corrosion situation of equipments, reduce the risk of the safety in production. Furthermore, it also facilitates the enterprise to evaluate the corrosion of pipelines and equipments, the residual lifetime of them and the existing risk. Yet, it can offer suggestions for the needed input amount of corrosion inhibitor and even its brand, besides offering reliable information to information system management for analyzing and decision-making.
