Genetic algorithm possess unique characteristics such as efficient, highly reliable, containing lagrge amount of information and easier to implement. As a result, genetic algorithm is widely used in mechanical engineering design field. The application of genetic algorithm in optimization of driving drum of belt conveyor is studied in this paper, and computer programs are written with Matlab 7.0. This thesis takes a heavy driving drum of belt conveyor as an example, firstly, the optimization function are built up, then the driving drum of belt conveyor stucture is precision optimizated with genetic algorithm, which offer a foundation to design more reasonable structure for driving drum in order to meet the application demands.Parameterized modeling system of belt conveyor driving drum is studied and developed in this thesis also. Under Solid Works software circumstance, process of parameterized modeling and viertual assembly of main parts of driving drum are accomplished with VB programming, through which also can output two-dimentional planner drawing, then the efficiency of driving drum modeling and drawing are highly increased.The tranditional mechanical design process is a process of repeated improving and verification, low in efficiency and time-consuming. In this thesis, Finite element analysis software is applied to stress analysis and strain analysis, which achieved the system analysis of driving drum structure optimizated results.Finally, virtual design software of belt conveyor driving drum is developed with VB, through which systematization and visualization of optimum design, three-dimensional parameterized modeling, structural analysis are realized, and which will better for increasing efficiency and standard of drum, the design period is reduced too.The practical problems in process of driving drum of belt conveyor design are solved in this thesis, which has definite practical meaning and will be beneficial ecomomically.
