The belt conveyor is divided into many types according to its application and has been widely applied as one of important translation tool of modern bulk material. However, the pipe belt conveyor is a new type of special belt conveyor base on the traditional channel belt conveyor, its drives drum’s width is lager than general belt conveyor. Furthermore, the drive drums bear complex external load and easily lead to failure in the operation, its vibration has a lager impact on transport works steadily of conveyer belting. Therefore, a detailed analysis is conducted for drive drums of pipe belt conveyor by finite element analysis and virtual prototype technology in this paper.Firstly, in this work the kinds and configuration of the drive drums of pipe belt conveyor is introduced. The dynamics equation of drive drums is established through a theoretical analysis of strained condition of drive drums.Secondly, the static analysis and modal analysis of the drive drum is conducted using the commercial software ANSYS. In addition, the each vibration mode shape of the drive drum, the strains and the stresses of main components and parts on the drive drum such as cylinder shell, web and shaft etc. are discussed. It is found that the maximum strain and displacement of the drive drum appear on the cylinder shell. This has a certain guiding significations for the optimum design on drum of engineering practices. A study on vibration characteristics of the rigid shaft cylinder and the flexible shaft cylinder is conducted by creating a virtual prototype of drive drums of pipe belt conveyor for a certain operating condition. The results show that the results obtained from flexible shaft cylinder are more practical, compared to rigid shaft cylinder of tradition.Besides that, a comparison of methods on the PRO/E3D solid model import in ANSYS is conducted. Then the drum shaft inherent frequency is investigated by ANSYS and ADAMS. It is found that the seamless link of bidirectional data interchange between ADAMS and ANSYS can be achieved within the error rang allowed. Thereby, the design period is shortened and equality and reliability is improved.
