As an important equipment of bulk material transportation, the belt conveyoris widely used in various fields of the society. Especially in the coal, power,metallurgical, mine, port, commissariat and so on, the belt conveyor play a big role.As an important component of the belt conveyor, the safety and reliability of thedriving drum restricts the development of belt conveyor seriously. Now belt conveyorhas development towards to the direction of long distance, large capacity and hightransportation.It is very important to design a driving drum which is safe and reliable.This paper analysis and optimizes the driving drum used the finite element analysissoftware ANSYS. The presented result provides consultation for design of drivingdrum.Firstly, this paper introduces the structure and classification of drum, thenanalyses the stress of the driving drum. It presents the surface load of the drivingdrum along circumferential exponential distribution and accords to the distribution ofaxial first-order sine law. This distribution meets the actual circs better in practicalwork. And then this paper summarizes the failure modes and the failure reasons ofdriving drum, and puts forward the calculation formula and exertion method of thedrum parts.Secondly, the paper is modeling for driving drum, carving up the net, forcing,analyzing the solution, educing the stress-strain of the drum, finding the maximalstress and obtaining the stress image and deformation figure of main component ofdrum as cylinder shell, shaft and web by analyzing analysis results of ANSYS. Itprovides the basis for the optimization of the drum.Finally, the paper is to optimize the drum. It introduces the process ofoptimization design, reaches the result of the optimization, and then analysis theresults. It meets the strength requirement of the drum and reduces the total weight andcost of the drum to achieve the goal of design optimization.
