Ring rolling is a plastic forming technology, in which the diameter of the ring increases as the ring cross-section decreases. Comparied with traditional technology, it has many characteristics such as saving forming force and Production cost, increasing utilization ratio of energay and material, rising productivity, widening porcessing range of ring product etc.In the the design of Ring rolling process, we need to select and calculate many parameters. The traditional manual design has many problems, such as inefficieney and high cost in processing technic design, have great dependence on personal experience. The appearance of Ring Rolling CAPP System can solve this problem and implement the automation and integration of Ring rolling design, analysis and manufacturing.The CAPP system is currently used now. The Ring Rolling CAPP system developed by Yu-feng LIU is a intelligent systems based on VB platform and and fuzzy mathematical theory. However, this system still many shortcomings and deficiencies due to various reasons. And this system has only developed a rectangular cross-section Ring Rolling CAPP system is not a comprehensive or great practicability one.In this paper, we investigate the CAPP system developed by Yu-feng LIU, find its shortcomings and deficiencies. Then, we induct a three-dimensional finite element simulation software to simulate and analyze the Ring rolling process and get a practical rough design method of the Inner-stepped cross-section or Outer-stepped cross-section.On these bases above, we develop a Ring Rolling CAPP system for Inner-stepped or Outer-stepped cross-section Ring Rolling.This new CAPP system is simple and practical, not only can be used for rectangular cross-section Ring Rolling but also for Inner-stepped or Outer-stepped cross-section Ring Rolling. New system can connect to Pro/E and Excel, build the cad drawing,model and quotation automatically. With the help of this new system, the ring rolling process design and quote cycle is cut down consumedly.
