Acrylate polymer emulsion adhesive is one of the important applications for emulsion polymerization. It is also one of the polymer emulsion adhesive which is developed most fast since 1980s. And it is being greatly used in the furniture industry, artificial plant industry, building materials industry, packing trademark industry, shoes-making industry, transportation industry and electronic etc. Based on the research status of acrylate copolymer emulsion adhesive, the emulsion copolymerization is performed according to molecule design theory. To expect to solve the problem about acrylate copolymer emulsion adhesive and improve the properties of copolymer emulsion adhesive, we optimize the synthesis technique and adjust the combination of monomer and get the acryl ate copolymer emulsion with good comprehensive performance. An acrylate polymer, PVAc/PBA, with rigid core-soft shell structure was synthesized by seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization under monomer starved condition. VAc was used as the monomer for the core and for butyl acryl ate as the monomer for the shell. Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate was used as the cross-linking agent. The influence of polymerization craft, emulsifier's dosage, the ratio of the emulsifier in two steps, the addition rate of monomer for shell, and the amount of cross-linking agent on particle structure and the comprehensive performance of emulsion was investigated in details. By the means of FTIR, DSC, TEM, the results show that the emulsion particles via seeded semi-continuous emulsion polymerization have distinct core-shell morphology, which has two glass transition temperatures. This emulsion has lower temperature of film forming, no tending to get soft and better rigidity.A foil laminating adhesive is prepared by using vinyl acetate and butyl acryl ate as main monomers and acrylic acid as modifier via semi-continuous seeded emulsion polymerization. The modified adhesive has excellent adhesion and freeze resistance, and also easy to dry. The effects of weight ratio of hard and soft monomer, amounts of initiator, emulsifier and acrylic acid on the properties of the adhesive are discussed.
