Pipe handling system is a very important part of automated drilling system. In abroad, the technology of automated pipe handling has been researched and applied from 40s, in order to change the way of traditional pipe handling and improve safty and efficiency, also for reducing the physical strength of workers. But, the research of this technology is just beginning in domestic.Pipe handling system has significant advantages on improving working condition and drilling efficiency. Pipe handling system not only saves workers from tired situation, but also reduces costs of drilling, this is very important for these deepwater drillingplatforms which are in poor environment and cost highly. This paper proposed a fully automated pipe handling system for 6th generation deepwater semi-submersible drilling platform, the system can perform a series of operations such as transferring, racking and making triples.In this paper , those tasks have been accomplished as following:First, purpose and significance of this subject was analysed and development of automated pipe handling system was presented. Second, the paper improved the part of pipe racking system on drilling floor that had been complished by others of research team, pipe setback and thread compensation device were added. Third, the paper designed mechanical system of part of pipe transferring system between pipedeck and drillingfloor which composed of Gantry crane and Catwalk machine , and it has been modeled by using 3D solid model software. Lastly, the paper analyzed statics, kinematics and dynamics of pipe transferring system, and the force and the velociety of every mechanism were got, on this basis, the hydraulic system of pipe transferring system was proposed and hydraulic component was designed and choiced.
