The overall object of this study is to establish a sampling and determination method to determine the SO2 and NO2 in museum environment. This method should meet the museum's fire control safety and suit for sampling in the cabinet. A diffusional passive sampling-Ion Chromatography method for determination of trace SO2 and NO2 was selected according to the characteristics of the museum environment.Based on passive sampling methods presently, a new adsorbing liquid suitable for trace SO2 and NO2 was developed. The effect of blank-preservation, sample loading recovery, sampling precision and absorbing curve were also investigated in this study. On detection aspect, the proper anion exchange column was chose to analysis the anions involved in the passive sampling. The stability, injection repeatability, linear range, instrumental limit of detection and quantitation were investigated, and the detection results were compared to those based on national standard method. Finally, the absorption coefficients of passive sampling for SO2 and NO2 were obtained by simultaneous sampling using active and passive sampling methods. The absorption coefficients make it convenient to obtain the amounts of SO2 and NO2 in atmospheric environment using passive sampling-Ion Chromatography method and improve the method's practical value. The passive sampling-Ion Chromatography method for determination of SO2 and NO2 in museum environment was verified by actual application. Therefore the method established a certain foundation to deepen the study of the conservation environment of cultural relics and offered technology guarantee for the further make of technical specification in museum indoor air quality monitoring.
