As important basic components of industrial production, large gear has been widely used in the actual production; its manufacturing technology and measuring precision techniques are updated and improved constantly. The development statuses in domestic and foreign for the large gear measuring instruments are elaborated in this paper. After comprehensive comparison of the structure and methods of measuring instrument, the following conclusions were educed:The gear measuring on-machine measurement not only overcomes the drawbacks and shortcomings of other measuring methods, such as poor location reference, low accuracy problem, but also corrects processing error to avoid the second clamping and positioning, improve processing efficiency and so on. It also lays the foundation for the work.The composition and properties of involutes helical surface is researched detailedly by means of the knowledge of differential geometry firstly. The typical curve family of the involutes tooth profile curve such as involutes family, straight generatrix family, helix family, and contract trace family are described, and taking medium rack as the tool, the engagement principle of involutes gear for parallel axesare is researched, the feasibility of the measurement project on total deviation of tooth profile and spiral line because of straight generatrix deviation is demonstrated.The new gear precision standards (GB/T10095.1~10095.2-2001) requires the the total deviation of tooth profile, the total helix deviation and pitch deviation should be included. In which the total deviation of tooth profile and the total helix deviation reflects characteristics of gear tooth and the tooth. As with the involute helicoid can be malleable, so the straight generatrix on tooth surface has attributed the involute tooth outline surface geometry characteristic similarly, so the overall measuring instrument project of control system and hardware parts have been fully researched and designed, based on the on-machine measurement theory and technology characteristic of rack-shaped-edge probe, to meet the requirements of technology and accuracy when measuring. For the overall design, the control system of meter combines computer technology, mechanical and electrical technology, control technology, and high-precision mechanical transmission and measurement devices. The total deviation of tooth profile and spiral line is isolated, which is from measurement data that has been analyzed and processed. The measurement grid in the test tooth surface profile are from the rack-shaped-edge probe that along the edge of the axial coordinates of the probe displacement (determine the starting point, interval sampling) and measuring a number of straight generatrix, for different gear of modulus and tooth to carry out experimental research, and optimization research of the grid from discrete measuring.Based on the actual work of large gear hobbing machine, the control system with the field test showed that the measurement principle is corrected, the operation is feasible...
