The Automotive body structure uses a lot of sheet metal parts, and because the body needs to meet the safety requirements and the installation requirements such as power, chassis and other parts, the structure of sheet metal parts become more complex. This change has brought certain difficulties for structure design and manufacturing. So, design department should modify the part continually under the requirements of the manufacturing sector. For this reason, the efficiency of new car development will be reduced.With the development of CAD / CAE / CAM technology, the design of automotive sheet metal parts has completely broken through the traditional method, and computer simulation technology is the most active in the field of analysis of the sheet metal parts stamping. By this technology, we can predict the metal flow, stress and strain, the strength on die, defects and failure modes, etc. This technology has been a very favorable tool for structure design, mold design, process parameter optimization, etc. And this technology will be very important for ensuring part quality, increase material utilization, shorten product development cycles, lower manufacturing costs, etc.In this paper, we have chosen the design and forming process analysis of front panel upper inside of an economic car that has been listed lately by Tianjin FAW Xiali Automotive, Ltd to introduce the use of CAE simulation in the structural design, die design and process parameter optimization. This article first introduced the classification and production requirements of automobile sheet metal parts, outlined the core technology of metal forming simulation--the finite element method, and summarized the development and present studies of finite element method. As many vehicle manufacturers are using sophisticated metal forming simulation software, including AutoForm, Dyna-Form, Pam-Stamp and other commercial software, in this article we has compared the features of these software, and has given a detailed description of AutoForm software, which has been used by Tianjin Xiali Automotive, LtdThe structure of the upside of front panel is very complex. It is assembled mainly by the inner plate, outer plate, inner plate stiffeners and other stamping parts by welding, of which the forming process of the inner panel is the most difficult, apt to forming defects. The article has chosen the upper of front panel for example, gave a detailed analysis of the metal forming simulation that has been used from structural design stage until the final successful trial, and has summarized the problems that often encountered in structure design, metal forming simulation, process and die debugging, etc.Finally, we have given a summary on the using of AutoForm simulation software in the actual production, and we thought the following deserve further study:1. Summarize design principles of sheet metal parts and methods for addressing stamping defects, in response to a standard method for solving problems, in order to improve the efficiency of problem solving;2. To establish automobile body sheet metal parts library, try to standardize and parameterize sheet metal parts, and this will be convenient for the reference of follow-up model.
