In this paper, several polypgenylsulfone (PPSU) resins (provided by Solvay Advanced Polymers L.L.C.) of different fluidities, were studied on their thermal and rheological properties. The spinning process was simulated at different temperatures and winding speeds. Then the as-spun fibers were properly drafted and heat-sitted and the treated samples were tested on mechanical and thermal properties. Results showed that the PPSU resins have the potential of melt spinning and the fibers can be excellent in thermal and dimension stability, while the mechanical properties is good enough. After that, we selected two kinds of PPSU resins, which have better liquidities compared with the others, to make a format attempt on melt-spinning on the melt-spinning machine. The results showed that the suitable spinning temperature of PPSU is higher than 370℃, while the spinning temperature range is narrower than most of spinnable heat-resistant thermoplastic polymers. Meanwhile the winding speed is not so high, about 200~300m/min, and the graft multiple of the spun fibers is approximately 2. We focused on discussing the factors that affect the spinning property of PPSU, including water, spinning temperature, spinning speed, feeding mode, filter system and the structure and properties of the raw materials, and finally attributed the low spinnability of PPSU to its special structure and performances.
