Large-scale gears are widely used in national economy and national defense industry. Because the precision requirement will tend to be higher and higher, gear error measurement becomes essential, especially process detection, which can adjust processing parameters and improve the process using the detection result. However, most of the current large gear measurements are off-line, with low efficiency and low accuracy. So it is necessary to develop an on-line measurement and evaluation system of large-scale gears.This paper analysed and compared gear error measuring technology and device both at home and abroad, on the base of which a scheme of on-line measurement and evaluation based on coordinate method was proposed. The measuring mechanism was designed as side type and the control mode of"PC + motion controller"was used ,which has taken full advantage of motion controller's function and the man-machine interaction of PC.According to the definition of each single error and seted allowable values in the national standards, an mathematical model of gear error measurement and evaluation was established, after analysing and disposing metrical data, the solution and evaluation of each error were completed. Hardware platform was set up, and using VC++ 6.0 as development environment, the error measuring and evaluation software was designed. With thought of hierarchic and modularization, many functions were realized, such as motion control, data acquisition, database creation and access, ethernet communication, error curve plotting etc. This software system is convenient to debug, maintain and expand function.At last, field experiment was carried out to test and verify the system scheme and software function. Experimental results showed that the measurement data was basically consistent with the theory data, which indicated that the meaurement scheme was feasible, developed software was correct, and provided the basis for technological parameter setting during the following gear mechining.
