Urban system and highway networks are two large and complex systems, before, a lot of work was made to study the morphological characteristics of the two complex systems, and fruitful results were achieved. However, the inherent laws of these two system's spatial distribution can't be revealed. So this thesis uses the fractal theory to study these two complex systems, and then explore the inherent laws of these two systems.The spatial distribution of urban system and highway networks all have the most important feature of fractals which is self-similarity, so the fractal theory can be used to study these two systems. In terms of the urban system, the characteristics is discussed which reflect the urban system by means of aggregation dimension,gridding dimension,population size the number of sub-bovey,euclidean distance correlation dimension, take Hunan province for example, these four dimensions were measured, and the geographical significance that is reflected by the values of each dimension were interpreted; in terms of the highway networks, the characteristics is discussed which reflect the expressway networks by means of length dimension,gridding dimension,branch dimensions,high-speed mileage correlation dimension, take Hunan and Henan province for example, these dimensions were measured, the realistic significance which the values of dimensions reflected and the reason for the two provinces'dimensions differences were researched.This thesis described the fractal definitions, characteristics, measurement, and the extensive application. In this thesis, the urban system and expressway network system were detailed explored by means of the combination of theories, models and examples, particularly, the fractal theory's application on the research of the transport network,the fractal characteristics of the transport network,and the measure method for the transport network fractal dimension were emphatically introduced.Finally, the thesis uses the fractal theory to explore the inherent laws of urban system and highway networks. Through the above-mentioned research, this thesis reached the following conclusions: The urban system and highway networks have the complex nature, fractal theory's application on the research of these complex systems are feasible and effective; Hunan relatively low level of urbanization, we should speed up the construction of cities and roads, so that the level of urbanization increased rapidly; ArcInfor, Matlab software in the thesis which were used in the entire research process plays a vital role; Hunan province must promote the construction of the expressway networks; The thesis uses the fractal theory to study the special distribution of the urban system and highway networks, they have the inherent relationship.In short, fractal theory is not only reveal the complexity of urban systems and the highway network, but also reflect the inherent laws in spatial distribution of the two systems at some extent, therefore, the thesis may provide a good basis for the planning of urban system and the highway network in the future.
