In recent years, with the rapid development of the national urban economy and urban construction, all parts of our country have begun to focus on urban public space, and sparked off a craze for urban square construction. There is no lack of excellent works in the built urban square, but in the same time, some problems have arisen:pursue the plane composition and aerial view blindly, pay all attention to the design of the plan, overlook the importance of the building facades enclosing the urban square, etc. All above is precisely performance of having little knowledge of what do the users demand.Users’demands to the urban square mainly include the practical demand and the aesthetic demand. To meet users’practical demand, urban square should provide spaces of different scales through layout design of its furniture, and to meet users’aesthetic demand, urban square should provide visual information of different scales through the design of the building facades enclosing it. Based on the understanding of the fractal geometry, these two characters of the urban square are the very content that the fractal theory emphasizes and researches.Based on concepts about hierarchical spatial scale and hierarchical visual information scale, this article attempts to research about the urban square spatial form by the fractal theory perspective. According to related concepts and method in fractal theory, quantitative analyses are made to the urban square green space layout and the building facades enclosing the urban square. Through discussions about the fractal dimension and the box-counting charts, this article carries out a thorough study of the urban square spatial form and summaries problems in its design. This article consists of five parts. The first part is an introduction, to specific research background, content, significance and innovation, and to define key concepts of this article. The second part provides theoretical basis and current researches in related field. In the third part, quantitative calculations and analyses are respectively made to the hierarchical spatial scales of the urban square green space and the hierarchical visual information scales of the the building facades enclosing the urban square. The fourth part carries out a thorough study of the problems found in the third part. The last part is mainly a summary of research results, shortcomings, and prospects.
