the vehicle ownership in the city rising, at the same time, due to rapid urbanization, large numbers of people into cities, this brought new challenges to the urban road traffic system. Due to its own characteristics, urban centers attract a lot of people and vehicles, which is also the city traffic congestion and congestion-prone areas, congestion and delays are often spread to a large extent, it influenced the city's normal and healthy development. So it is necessary to optimize the traffic of urban center immediately.Firstly, the importance of study urban centers road traffic optimization strategy is analyzed. On the basis of defined concept, scope and characteristic, we studied traffic capacity and transport properties of urban centers, provides a theoretical basis for the study of traffic optimization strategy. Then combine centre traffic situation of cites and medium and small cities in china, analyzed existence problems of medium and small cities in land features, residents travel characteristics, characteristics of transport and road transport system features four aspects . Finally, under the guiding ideology of integration and optimization of road resources , reasonable transportation and land use patterns , transportation demand management, studied traffic optimization strategy of medium and small cities'center. Combined engineering practice of a medium and small city in Guangdong province, from the road network improvement, public transport, static traffic, traffic management four aspects described specific measures to optimize traffic of medium and small cities central district.
