Channel is a part of port water area which has enough width and water depth for vessels to pass through safely. With the increase of freight volume through waterway transportation and upsizing of vessel scale, some channels have even been barriers for the development of seaports. According to the criterion, the design of seaport channel is merely based upon the size of design vessel, which couldn't reflect channel's ability to transit vessels and its operation quality.Channel transit capacity is a measure of channel's ability to transit a moving stream of vessels. While channel service level is a scale for the perceived performance of transit service. The purpose of this research is to give a more scientific and comprehensive method for the design of seaport channel.This thesis summarizes the research means and achievements on channel transit capacity and service level of seaport, analyses the disadvantage of static calculation model used in inland waterway and introduces the dynamic analysis method—queuing theory.This thesis put forward a new description of channel transit capacity of seaport and creates a calculation model for channel transit capacity of seaport based on queuing theory. Two system is modeled to describe the process of vessels accepting service at seaport. M/M/c and M/D/c queue are chosen to analyse the arrivals and departures system. The amount of vessels that accepting service in both systems is regard as channel transit capacity.Using research method of highway service level for reference, vessel density, vessel waiting-time for channel and vessel dwell time at port are established to be the indexs of channel service level of seaport. A method to determine the value of vessel density at each service level is proposed according to the relationship between traffic density and traffic flow status. While the value of vessel waiting-time for channel and vessel dwell time at port at each service level can be derived from calculation model for channel transit capacity.At the end, the model is applied to analyse transit capacity and service level of Main Channel of Qingdao Port, whose grading standard of service level and the channel transit capacity were both obtained. The research achievements of this thesis can be treated as the reference for Qingdao Port to establish resource allocation plan and carry out reconstruction and extension project of main channel.
