With the development of the power system, weak ties of the power grid, long power transmission line, heavy system loading and the fast charging magnet system widely used in the system has become its main characters. They cause the reduction of the system damping and increase the possibility of low-frequency oscillations. Low-frequency oscillation problem has serious impact on the stability of power system operation. Power system stabilizer (PSS) is currently the most effective suppression measure of low-frequency oscillation suppression.In this paper, the causes and characteristics of low frequency oscillation are analyzed firstly. Secondly the relationship between the excitation system and low frequency oscillation and the principle of damping low-frequency oscillation of PSS which based on single-machine infinite bus system model are studied. The characteristic analysis of research model is maked by using frequency-domain analysis function of MATLAB and the parameters of PSS are analyzed and designed by using the principles of phase compensation. Again the computer-aided calculation interface is designed by using C++Builder to decrease the workload because of the complexity of parameters calculation of the modle. In the end, single-machine infinite bus system model is established by using MATLAB-Simulink toolbox. It is verified that the designed PSS has the ability to suppress low-frequency oscillations and to raise the power limit of small signal stability through simulation.The results illustrated that the parameters of designed PSS are reasonable and can improve the system damping when system oscillation happened and has effective suppression on low-frequency oscillation. The method using MATLAB to design the PSS parameters is simple, intuitive and reasonable.
