In the new era, human beings created a variety of new construction materials. However, living in a space made by lots of new materials, they got tired of modern environment and felt anxious about it. So people began to re-examine the traditional architectural environment, trying to find some beneficial factors. Stone, as a building material with long history and strong regional culture, still has its unique charm in today's built environment. Its structural properties, environmental benefits and aesthetic value have always been highly praised.In the first part of this paper, basic introductions of the production, mining and processing of stone are given. These are the foundation of Chinese traditional built environment with stones.Then the author discusses about the use of stone from the perspective of interface, regarding stones as a part of the built environment category rather than merely a building material and deepening the relationship between stone and the building environment. From the point of view of interface, the author systematically integrates the concrete application stone of in Chinese traditional built environment. In the paper, in aspect of the different use of stones, the built environments of stone are divided into there types: built substance environment, built outdoor environment and indoor environment.In the next part, the use of Chinese traditional stone's cultural foundation is analyzed and summarized focusing on analysis of special Chinese traditional imagery with stones from the aesthetic point of view.Finally, Chinese traditional architectural environment with stones is divided into structural construction and non-structural construction. Two types of application system of stone in the built environment are described from these two aspects, methods applied in the system are summarized, and stones and Chinese traditional built environment's construction system are closely connected.This study uses the primary data of mapping and related documents so as generalize from particulars which have some inspiration on the use of stones or other construction materials to build a harmonious living environment for human beings.
