In the 21st century, the scale of electric power system is gradually expanded and higher power system stability and security is required. Substation act as an important part in transmission and distribution system and its stability and reliability operation plays an important role in the normal and safe operation of the whole power system. The traditional substation, especially the high-voltage substation, transparent can't meet the demand of safe, stable, high-quality and economic operation in power system, let alone to adapt to the management mode of modern power system. As the development of electronic technology, computer technology, computer communication technology, the substation integrated automation technology develop rapidly and is widely used in our country power system in recent years.In the substation integrated automation system, the secondary substation equipment (including measuring instruments, signaling systems, relay protection, automatic devices and remote devices, etc.) are recombined and optimized in the functions and design , and advanced computer technology, modern electronic technology and signal processing technology are used to the monitoring, measurement, automatic control and computer protection of the whole substation main equipment and the automatic transmission and distribution line by automation, and also including integrated automation functions of dispatch and communication etc. Therefore , the substation integrated automation is the integrated applications of automation technology, computer technology and communication technology in the field of substations.The integrated automation is of automation, computer and communication technologies used in the substation. It's active meaning to carry out reformation of old 1100 kV PINGSHAN substations to improve operation mode and boost automation level and consolidate safe operation. Firstly, this paper deals with the types, functions and development of the substation integrated automation system, introduces new techniques including the system's configuration, performance, communication and protocol etc.. The future development trend of the substation integrated automation system is also forecasted. Secondly,the status quo of the substation automation is presented in the aspects of communication network and equipment lockout and staff management. Common problems existing in these aspects are analyzed, and settlement suggestions are put forward. Combining the problems existing in the reformation of integrated automation system in a substation, the principles and the points needing attention are discussed in type selection according to the function, structural type, network protocol and transfer protocol.
