Substation is an important component of the power grid. With the development of modern electronic, computer, communication and other high technologies, power grid automation technology is enhanced significantly, and the whole power grid automation level is improving step by step. The integrated automation technology of substation has been adopted in most of the lately founded substations. The problems of the old substations, including out-dated technology, low reliability, maintenance’s difficulty and the requirement of on-site personnel, has become increasingly prominent, and thus it becomes a vital issue to reconstruct the old substations during the development of the automation of substation.The connotation, characteristics, superiority of the substation automation technology and key technologies of the new intelligent substation are introduced in this paper. The primary and secondary equipment of the Liutianzhuang substation are analized and the achievable goals of the reconstruction project are proposed. In accordance with the directions of intelligent automation and integrated automation,two reconstructionblue prints are proposed. After comparing of both blue prints,one of them is choosed to carry out the construction. The detailed process of the construction points are also presented in this paper.After the reconstruction of integrated automation in Liutianzhuang substation,the automatic monitoring, measurement, control, protection, and the remote transmission information of the main equipment have been fulfilled in the whole station. The goals of automation reconstruction, such as four-remote, accident SOE,have been realized. Taking into account certain extensibility of the substation, the operation reliability is promoted and the available equipment has been reserved. The technology demand of non-keepers substation has been realized. In the construction process, 10 kv switching load scheme and 110 kv automatic switching transformation scheme are introduced in detail at the end of the paper.
