Following the development of more than a decade, the villa market in China has been gradually established. Yet due to the development cost and construction period, most villas are still developed as manufactured products with consistent style, lacking identity and cultural context or due concerns to the environment and sustainability. Guangzhou Dayi Villa project, which the author has been working with, is defined as one-of-the-kind alternative top-class villa in China. The project planning concept highlights the individuality and differentiation, i.e. make greatest efforts to preserve a primitive living environment within the city by seamlessly interfusing the villas with the original natural landscape without any trace of artificial landscaping. As for the architecture design which should vary with each villa, various international and domestic architects and architect offices are invited to provide individualized and creative architectural design proposals to create an exposition park of villa design. By summarizing the whole project progress including planning, design and construction, the paper intends to, with Dayi Villa Project as an example, explore the various aspects that need to be focused during the development of modern boutique villas in China. The paper is composed of six chapters. Chapter I briefs the origins and relevant background of the paper; Chapter II elaborates the development, design and basic construction method of the modern villas in China and summarizes the existing problems in villa design; Chapter III, by taking Jiujiantang Villa in Shanghai and Guantang Villa in Beijing as examples, briefly analyzes and comments the design of the boutique villas in China, and preliminary explores the design thoughts for boutique villa design in China; Chapter IV, by taking Dayi Villa in Guangzhou as an example, elaborates the project design concept and planning and design features, in particular, the harmony with the site, environment and historical and cultural context, which is a highlight of the project; Chapter V analyzes the architectural designs for Dayi Villa, and elaborates how the architectural form, space and details are designed to follow the natural laws, embody the human–oriented concept and showcase the genuine charms of the villa; it also concludes that the boutique villas shall actually bring more otherworldly spiritual and cultural enjoyment other than the mere physical aesthetics and comfort.Chapter VI discusses the construction of the future boutique villa and outlines the core concept and relevant characteristics of the boutique villa. The design and construction of the boutique villa actually embody the profound cares for human beings, the respect for the natural eco-environment and the grasp of the spirit of the era. Only by following the human-oriented concept and originating from the actual needs could it be possible to create a more humanistic living environment and enhance the cultural taste from all aspects of the villa life.
