The Preliminary Study In The Spirit Of Place On Reuse Of Old Buildings

ABSTRACT:With the accelerated process of urbanization, urban construction scale and spatial scale of the sharp increase in the development of the old building. It's a ideal option for people to focus on the construction of renovation and reuse projects and to conserve resources and protect the environment. The construction of the 21st century city, will get a transition from "build" to the "maintenance" era. In the reused area of old buildings, it is a innovative and effective way to make use of the theory on Place and the Spirit of the Place to design and practice research or exploration. And this is helpful for people and the environment to achieve sustainable development research trends. Contemporary architecture and urban planning primary tasks is the planning and construction of energy-saving awareness of the scope of the assessment of innovation. Updating on the old building to enhance the use, has become China's construction industry and the general awareness of architects.At present, major cities in rapidly changing, especially with the cultural memory,which are in the reuse of old buildings in the theory and practice still have various problems. How to enhance the reuse of old buildings in the places in belonging and identity, turns out to be a important factor,which is use the spirit of place as a measure of reuse of old buildings.Here, through literature statements, field research and architectural design examples to explore and re-use the old building the spirit of the place of theory and practice analysis. Reuse of old buildings specifically to go back to places, from the "spirit of place" was the most fundamental building experience. Show that the spirit of place construction, the architect's task is to create "conducive to meaningful human dwelling place, and continue its guardian spirit of place.This article is based on the reuse of old buildings within the scope of the research on the spirit of place. The main text includes three parts:The first part is the introductory chapter which describes the background, purpose and significance of the research. It also gives the explanation of domestic and international research dynamic and the necessity for the introduction of place theory one by one. And this article uses a variety of research and analysis methods to set out the main content and framework and to build the structure of the whole thesis.The second part is analytical articles. This part mainly discuss the main concept and the development process of reusing old buildings, the meaning and role of the place theory in the re-using of old building, and the way of shaping and the expressions of the core spirit of place in the old building re-using. This section includes the following three chapters:Chapter II:this chapter mainly explains the concept and the development process of re-using old buildings and the interpretation of the related concepts and research areas of the old buildings used in this article, and also gives the detailed interpretation of the relevant vocabulary in the area of re-using old buildings which helps the readers to analysis and understand. It integrates the history and the status in foreign countries in the area of reusing old buildings to clear the developments and trends and followed by the discussion of the problem in the practice and reality of reusing old buildings in our own country; Next, it smoothly goes to the re-excavation and re-understanding of the value of the reusing of old buildings, which makes it clear that it plays an important role in the social development, not only can ease the ecological environment, history, culture, socio-emotional and socio-economic crisis, but also can promote to solve a variety of contradictions between people and architecture, environment, history and reality, inheritance and innovation. Since the reuse of old buildings related to the relationship between people and the environment, then the theroy of the place which discusses the relationship between people and the environment smoothly becomes the focus of the next chapter.The third chapter is to analyze the meaning and the role of the place theory used in the reusing of old buildings, and to elaborate the content and origin of the theory of place, which clarifies the importance of the theory of place in the reuse of old buildings; this will lead to the core content of the place theory---the spirit of place. And then, this paper elaborate the content of the spirit of place in detail which is the theory preparation for the next chapter. On the basis of content analysis of the spirit of place, the operation mode and the significance of the spirit of place used in the reuse of old buildings are discussed, and then leads to the main content of the paper-the study of the spirit of the place in old buildings.The fourth chapter is the focus of the content of this paper. It analyze the performance of methods of the spirit of place in the old building re-use from theory and practice, study the way to shape and the way to express. First, it discusses the spirit of place in the reuse of old buildings in the locality, clears the link between regional and sense of belonging, analyzes the factors which influent the spirit of place in the reuse of old buildings, analyzes the regional expression, and analyzes and demonstrates the spatial modeling caused by the use of texture, color, and the different transformation, which allow people to transforme and reuse the old building from the respect of the regional expressions. Second, it discusses the historical and cultural of the spirit of place in reusing old buildings. It clears the links between the history, culture and identification, studies the method of historical and cultural heritage of the spirit of place in the reuse of old buildings, and discusses how to associate the new and the old spirit of place in history and culture, which gives rise to the identification of new place. Finally, it discusses the social spirit of place, studies social expressions of the spirit of place in in the old building re-use. There are two types of spirit of place which is in the old building re-use,these are in the performance of the social and technical participation, and in the public participation. and then the author elaborates that in the operation and management of social impact on the spirit of place in the reuse of old buildings.The third part is the conclusion chapter. This study,which focuses on the content of the spirit of place in the expression of reusing old buildings conditions, were summarized. The paper is opening up new design ideas to look forward to building on the reuse of the old theory and practice. We expect using spirit of place as the core to further improve the use of old buildings in the site development of the theory, and to achieve sustainable development and make active exploration.
