Coal, oil, natural gas and other fossil energy resources are increasingly depleted throughout the world. The energy crisis has become more severe in recent years. Human's dependence on short fossil energy brings potential risks to the future society and meanwhile, the plentiful exploitation and utilization of such energy has induced serious pollution to the environment the human being relies on for existence. As China is a country in quite short of fossil energy, the development of renewable energy has long-term significance from the viewpoint of environmental protection and sustainable energy development.A lot of basic research work of biomass resources and biomass energy conversion technologies has been carried out for this paper and a variety of industrial analysis and elemental analysis data of biomass fuels have been collected. The characteristiecs and performance of biomass fules and its direct combustion power generation are analysed in this paper by studing the main direct combustion power generation technology at present. The emission levels and environmental performance of major gaseous pollutants from biomass power generation are summed up in combination of environmental monitoring data for completion and acceptance of some biomass power enterprises. It also gives comparison between that emissions and thermal power generation. With nine 2x15MW biomass power plants integrated, pollutant emission levels of biomass power generation is summed up. The results showed that:SO2 emissions is 192t/a-554t/a, SO2 emission concentration is 222mg/Nm3-663.06mg/Nm3, SO2 emissions per kWh is 1.10/kWh-3.30g/kWh; dust emissions is 7.65t/a-22.54t/a, dust emission concentration is 7.17mg/Nm3-27.78mg/Nm3, and dust emissions per kWh is 0.05/kWh-0.14g/kWh.The results show that:the emissions of biomass power generation are at a low level, and particularly, the average level per unit of electricity is much lower than that of thermal power generation. Biomass power generation has significant environmental performance. On that basis, recommendations and reference rang is proposed for an emission standards formulation of biomass power generation. At the same time, the development status of biomass power generation and the existing problems in actual running of some biomass power plants are investigated and researched for this paper. Furthermore, the application and adaptability of biomass power generation in China are summarized. At last, the overall trend of biomass power generation is described and the corresponding pollution control measures and recommendations are put forward.
