With the consisting development of urban construction, the number and scale of loads in city distribution networks have been increasing, meanwhile users'requirements on the reliability and quality of power supply have been improving. As the distribution system is located the terminal part of the power grid and is directly connected to the users, hence it would be very important to keep distribution system safe and economical. Distribution network reconfiguration is an effective method in improving power supply reliability, safety in distribution networks, hence has been considered to be a crucial part of the distribution automation. In this paper, based on analyzing and describing the development and current status of distribution network reconfiguration algorithm, a new algorithm based on physical strategy has been described. The main work has been shown as follow:An algorithm called traditional branch-exchange algorithm belonged to heuristic algorithm has been analyzed in particular, the algorithm has been implemented by Matlab program, then some characteristics and flaws of this algorithm have been mentioned.A power flow tracing theory has been described. In this theory, based on basic principle in electric circuit, the distribution situation of sources output power in electric networks and hypotaxis relation between branch power and source power has been analyzed, and the conclusion of any branch loss factor woud be distributed in term of plural linearity based on network configuration and parameter has been made.A new distribution network reconfiguration algorithm has been described. the method adopts loss reduction as its reconfiguration mathematical model, and forms a heuristic criterion based on the power flow tracing theory shown above:the criterion could estimate the network power loss variation of a reconfiguration scheme according to the variation of the elements of node admittance matrix. After a reconfiguration scheme has been executed, the next scheme can be searched without power flow calculation. Tests in single and multiple power sources show that present algorithm is effective, and a comparison has been made between the algorithm and branch-exchange method.
