With the improving technical level of the new built ship, more and more requirements are being needed for ship operator's skill. The "STCW78/95" regulation of the IMO strengthens the convention on the crew's skill training. Comparing with the engine room local training on the ship, the engine simulator is not only economic but also convenient. Traditional engine simulator is always in the form of plane, the person who is trained couldn't feel that they are personally in the scene, which may affect the effect of training. If we combine the virtual reality technology and the plane engine simulator, build the three-dimensional virtual engine room and make people roam and operate in it, it will be a perfect way for training. Besides, it also makes good for teaching and research.The fork-type steering gear system of the "JIFABOHAI" container ship in Dalian port is taken as simulated object, combination method of the virtual reality technology and engine simulator logic is researched. Firstly, the structure, working principle and operating method of the fork-type steering gear system is introduced. Then analysis on the rotating principle of steering actuator and flow characteristics of the hydraulic system is done. According to the existing modeling method, based on appropriate simplification, a dynamic mathematics model of the fork-type steering gear system is established. Then on the basis of the mathematics model, using the hydraulic driving and control system simulation tool in the MATLAB/Simulink toolbox, the fork-type steering gear system is simulated on real time. The simulation results are compared with regulations of the IMO and national relevant standards of authority in order to ensure the correction of the simulation model. Then we dealt with the changing parameter curves of the simulation model, construct the relationship function between the steering rotating pressure and steering angle, and fitting reference curves, so that it can be combined with the three-dimensional model in the virtual world. This paper draws the three-dimensional model of the fork-type steering gear system with three-dimensional modeling software, renders to improve its effect, make it look like the real system, then the model is imported into the XNA three-dimensional development platform. In the XNA platform, with the C# programming language, the simulation result of MATLAB simulation model will be combined with the three-dimensional model of the steering gear system, make up a virtual scene similar to the real ship.Research of the paper will be a reference for showing the real-time system working principle in the virtual scene of engine system and the combination of the engine simulator and virtual reality technology in the future. With the persistent improvement of system mathematics model, we believe that the real physical model combined with virtual environment would be achieved.
