Lock hydraulic characteristics of water filling System is an important issue related to the operation of locks and the efficiency of water filling. The rapid development of computational fluid dynamics and computer technology provides a new research tool for the lock hydraulic characteristics. In the present paper, research is concentrated on the water filling system of the short-culvert. The CFD software Flow3d is applied to simulating the process of three-dimensional flow process of the water filling system, based on which, the velocity field, the vortex profile, the distribution of the turbulence energy, as well as the energy dissipation process by colliding have been obtained. The fluctuation of the water surface elevation in the lock chamber has also been studied as well. Moreover, the flow process induced by baffle sill are simulated, from which fluctuation of water surface elevation in the lock chamber under the condition after adding energy dissipation measures are obtained. The velocity field in the chamber, the process of turbulence energy decay as well as the characteristics of the flow circulation and the vortex flow can also be achieved. Comparison is performed between various hydraulic characteristics under the condition with and without baffle sills.
