Community Planning On The Thoughts Of Aging In Place

In 2009, China began to enter the stage characterized by rapid development of aging population. Such economically developed cities as Shanghai are approaching the highest degree of aging in the world. However, social and economic development lagging behind the aging process makes the issue of elderly living and housing become increasingly prominent.Communities are the major regions for the elderly to live. It is the basic unit in which we carry out community and environmental planning. Therefore, the research range is limited to community-wide. Through the research on the physical environment of Xuhui District and Xujiahui Community, the needs of elderly in the community and the characteristics of the elderly's behavior, we find many current problems. The targeted design strategies are then be proposed. On this basis, a community support system fitting the needs of old people is built. Establishing an"elderly-friendly community"is considered as the overall goal. To achieve which, the spatial model of community support system in the framework of physical planning aspects is set up. At the policy level, the evaluation system of planning for"elderly-friendly community"is established. And thus, a complete system of planning methods on the thoughts of aging in place nitially takes shape.The first chapter focuses on the aging status, trends and characteristics of China and Shanghai. And I also study the theories and practice both at home and abroad.In chapter II, I make a research on the space environment and physical facilities both in Xuhui District and Xujiahui Community and find the problems on the existing retirement environment.In the third chapter, a investigate targeting the elderly in Xu Jiahui Community is made on their living will, physiological needs, psychological needs, social needs and characteristics of behave. On the base of which, the corresponding planning and design countermeasures are proposed.On the base of the above investigates, I propose the overall planning objectives: to build "elderly-friendly community"in Chapter IV. The overall objective will be achieved through building material-supported community, service-supported community and emotion-supported community. A space model of the physical material-supported system is also established.In Chapter V, a community planning evaluation system for benefits of the old-age is set up to supervise the case of community planning and guide the implementation of the improvement of planning the next round. There are three aspects of innovation in the paper:Firstly, the research is carried out from the perspective of different subjects. The elderlys'physical needs, psychological needs, social needs and behavioral characters are taken as a starting point to explore the planning and design strategies.The second is the overall planning objective of "elderly-friendly community", and the spatial model of community support system.Thirdly, a evaluation system of community planning on the thoughts of"elderly-friendly community"is set up to provide guiding standard for building new community as well as transforming old community, monitoring the implementation effect and further improving the planning.
