As the first defensive line of the power station,there are more and more people focus on the reliability of the relay protection. The development of relay protection test becomes increasingly important to the relay protection. According to the development of relay protection, especially the development of the microcomputer based relay protection, the old protection technology does not meet the demands of the new device. So the testing device of new generation is in bad need.According to the relevant national standards and considering of the needs of ourselves, we have developed a new protection test device. The equipment could be easily used to test most relay protections in the market. There is also a strong point of high precision output with it.In this paper, the author introduces the development of relay protection, the development of the protection test and its development situation, and development trend is also introduced, then the assignment of the paper is to be put forward. The author designs the whole software frame, which included the framework of the host computer and the lower computer. The communication protocol of software system is designed too. Then the print solution of the test report is designed and given, on this basis, the author carried it out by the software code. The author also analysis the way of the data storage in this system .After that, he brings out two ways to retain data by linked list and files. At last the problems which come across in the software development are discussed.Above all, taking differential protection, synchronous device and overall function test modules as examples, the research of how to design the three modules and their design steps are given. In other words, the author analysis the requirement of the how to test the relay protection, and designs the test items of those modules. In the following the author derives algorithms for relevant relay protection and carries them out by software language. Then the test logic is designed in detail, and the testing procedure of the modules is established.
