Rural power grid upgrading can effectively improve the automation level and energy efficiency, it’s a contemporary work and benefits in long-term. The paper reveals the existing problem in rural power grid, including:low power supply reliability, low intelligent level, plenty of outdated equipment. So the "feeder automation and GIS application" project was researched.After investigating the application status of power distribution automation system in city and combining the opportunity for rural power distribution network upgrade project, the paper analyses and proposes a rural distribution network automation technology’solution. Based on the calculation and analysis of lOkV rural power distribution network current situation, it shows the method relaying on using breakers and protections has low reliability and causes widespread power outage. A perfect solution was proposed, which uses economical and practical intelligent switches to achieve the fault isolation and power restoration. By using fault remote transmission device to transfer the automation devices’ action information, the design doesn’t need to construct the power distribution terminals and complex communication channel. By applying the GIS theory, a formed application system was designed, which includes AutoCAD, Google Earth layers and device database. These solutions provide advanced technology applications for rural power grid upgrade project.The paper integrates the feeder automation theories, and designs the solutions as follows:using current-time sectionalizer and recloser in less layers radial network; using voltage-time sectionalizer and recloser in multilayer radial network, hand in hand annular network, multi-segmented and multi-contacted annular network. The switches time operations were analyzed, and the time setting methods were designed.A new solution in the construction of GIS power distribution maps system was proposed, which combines AutoCAD; Google Earth; device database as a whole system. This method solves the power grid design, equipment planning and management, data acquisition and monitoring. It has clear graphics, accurate and reliable engineering positioning. It’s more convenient to use it in line retest, pre-settlement management, cost analysis, as-built drawings management, material management. It greatly improves the productivity.The feeder automation and GIS application has been applied in Qujing rural power grid. The results shows that:these measures narrow the scope of failure, improve the reliability of power supply, simplify the operation and maintenance work, increase the feeder load rate, strengthen power supply capacity. Using GIS in the line design and management, the labor intensity was reduced, the management of power service was improved.Finally, with the guidance of the principles of rural power grid construction, the designs about power sources; lines; devices; ammeters were presented. The main applied researches in rural power grid reform were completed.
