Bashu area, located in Southwest of China, has its rich history and distinct culture. Long before in ChunQiu Period , it already developed its own cultural and architectural identity and earned fame of "There were Ba in the East and Shu in the West of Sichuan" where were quite different from the rest of the China. Traditional architecture in this area was an important part of the culture and plays a significant role in distinguishing itself from the other Chinese cultures. However, modernization and globalization has its toll in the area and has being threatening the survival of traditional architectural heritage. The same things are happening all over the World and have brought the attention of architects to seriously think the survival and re-development of the traditional architectures. UIA, as the highest professional architect's organization, declared in its UIA Beijing Charter during the 20th UIA Congress that "Multiple technologies should be rooted in indigenous cultures and societies. Our past may be different, yet we are here to share a common future on this planet. Our paths may be different, yet we strive to build a common destiny." The UIA Beijing Charter laid foundation for reviving the traditional BaShu architecture. On the other hand, the West Exploitation provides us with an opportunity to jump-start the revival work. The thesis, firstly, explores the regional architecture design from the natural aspects, e.g. local ecology, climate, geography and other environmental factors as well as from local cultural aspects, e.g. traditional culture and folk custom etc. Secondly, the author studied notable features from three aspects: climate, landscape and craftsmanship. Based on these understanding, the author suggested methods to revive the degradation of traditional BaShu architecture. Finally, the author summarized that in order to preserve and revival local architecture, architects should understand the traditional culture and folk custom cherished by local inhabitants, and the effects brought by visitors from outside in the past decades, and apply all these knowledge to their architecture design.
