The preservation and redevelopment of historic districts has always been attached great importance by many developed countries while in China it started at a rather latestage. At the beginning, it only served as part of the preservation of Historic City. Only in recent years more and more attention has been paid to the preservation of historic districts.City Planning is not only regarded as an academic field, but also as social and governmental activities, which is proved repeatedly by theory and practice of the preservation and redevelopment of historic districts in China hi recent years. The structure of this thesis is built on the basic theories on historic district and the development of these theories, including the theory of integrated conservation, the theory of small-scale redevelopment and renovation, the "micro-circulation" theory, and the "Guozijian" model, is discussed briefly at the first part. The theories mentioned above, on the one hand, will continue to serve as the guidelines for the preservation and redevelopment of historic district in the foreseeable future, on the other hand, will be renewed constantly through practice. The preservation of historic heritage in China began with the protection of individual historic building and it was considered from the perspective of individual building rather than the whole historic district. Up to now, methods and measures especially designed for the protection of historic building are still applied to the preservation of historic district under many circumstances, which cannot produce satisfactory results. From the perspective of city planning, the thesis agues that the preservation of historic districts is a systematic project, and the protection of historic buildings is only part of it. Every aspect of social and economic life, such as government support, public participation, fund raising, planning, administrative and travel, contributes to not only how smooth the task of the preservation goes, but also the results of the preservation. Therefore, it is the purpose of this thesis to discuss the factors contributing to the preservation and redevelopment of historic district in order to make some positive contributions to the practice of preservation and redevelopment of historic districts.
