Reflecting on wars, praying to peace and honoring of martyrs who gave their lives for defending our country and protect the life and property of the people have become significant subjects of public memorial activities. The cemeteries of revolutionary martyrs, the monument to revolutionary martyrs and other memorial sites have become significant components of the city memorial buildings. After world war II, martyr cemeteries have been built, not only in China, but also all over the world. Here, people express their love of peace and aspirations against war.Every memorial building carries reminiscences and mourning of the martyrs as well as the feelings and reactions to reality. The environmental field derived from these memorial buildings is a reflectionof events, a kind of culture and a kind of spirit. The construction of the martyrs' cemetery can be divided approximately into three stages by time:70s, 80s and 90s. They all carry features of that particular era. After 50 years or so construction, the cemetery of revolutionary martyrs has evolved from nonexistence to existence, from infant stage to perfection through continuous adjustment. Large quantity and widely distribution are the distinguishing features of the cemetery of martyrs in China Without changing the role of educational base for patriotism, cemeteries of martyrs are evolving towards diversity and distinctiveness. Today, emphasizing coexistence with environment, succeeding to the cultural pulse, sustainable development and emphasizing the application of high technology as well as of humanism are the major trends of the cemetery of martyrs. In this paper, a case study of the actual project of the Xi'an cemetery of martyrs has been conducted. Experiences and understandings obtained through planning and engineering design have been summarized. Preliminary studies of the design principles, design methodology, functional components and artistic conceptualization have been carried out. The author's visions of the trends of the contemporary cemetery of martyrs and memorial buildings have also been proposed.
