Research On The Appropriate Scale And Distribution Of The Prairie Ecological Neighbourhood In The Central Section Of Inner Mongolia

It is evident, at the turn of the century, that values and priority in considering neighbourhood planning should be ecological oriented. Ecological neighbourhood has been a sure trend. The expansive Inner Mongolia prairie, a significant part of the Eurasia prairie, had become a northern barrier safeguarding the ecological security of our country. But attention have been paid more to the aspects such as zoology, botany, etc, and less to prairie residential environment in terms of planning control, which is much more stagnant comparing with the aspects mentioned above. Human beings being a dominant factor of the prairie ecological environment, the distribution and scale of prairie neighbourhood unit, the life style and means of production of its people, and their attitude towards the prairie, will greatly enfluence the ecological development of the prairie. The thesis probes into the appropriate scale and distribution of neighbourhood planning, hoping to contribute somehow to improving the prairie dwelling invironment.The situation of ecology environment of the central section of the Inner Mongolia prairie had been poor and weak, under the recent determination of the government to improve the ecological environment of the prairie, some effective measures , such as " evacuating residents and afforestation for sand sheilding , controlling of sandstorm, and aid-the-poor programme through shifting them to better living environment" have been taken, these haveshed light on prairie residential quarters --their layout is to be modified rearranged,shifted and replanned , which will surely bring remarkable improvement to the prairie residential quarters. The prairie residential quarters, among other dwelling patterns, being a unique residential form fusing with natural through their age-long development, it can be our starting point for a research into sustainable development that involves interdisciplinary cooperation. Its unique climate condition, its geographical environment, its life-style and custom, its ethnic culture tradition, and its religion will all permeat into the prairie neighbourhood fabric. Through a thorough analysis of this prairie neighbourhood, including its charatcteristic nature, ecological, productional and living condition, together with theoretical research and planning practice, will provide a valuable planning methodlogy for developing of residential quarters for the prairie residents, this is the goal of this thesis.
