Recently, Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is paid more and moreattention, which is the application of advanced computer technology, communicationtechnology, database technology and artificial intelligence to transportation to settletraffic congestion, guarantee traffic safety, and raise efficiency of utilization of trafficnetwork. It bases on the modern advanced science and technology. ITS covers a widerange of transportation systems, in which route guidance system is an importantapplication and one of hotspots of domestic ITS development and application atpresent. This paper presents three parts of design on route guidance system, which aresoftware design based on electronic map, method of route optimization and real-timedata collecting. In this paper, we present network topological configuration ofelectronic map based on realistic traffic network, build corresponding data storageconfiguration, and complete basic function of electronic map, the display andrefreshment of real-time data on electronic map, and the display of optimum routebased on the choice rule on the electronic map. In the design of route optimization, wepropose an improved heuristic A* arithmetic as optimum route search arithmeticbased on particularity of traffic network. In addition, after making a research ondynamic route guidance, we use a method of time subsection to calculate travel timeof route. And this paper presents an improved dynamic heuristic A* arithmetic, aforecast model of dynamic travel time, and travel route plan of vehicle in dynamicroute guidance. In the design of real-time data collecting, we use communicationcontrol of serial port to collect GPS data and real-time traffic data used in dynamicroute guidance and put them to real-time database. All these work will increase thesystem's practicability. In this paper, we use VC++ object-oriented program designing method, let SQLServer as database support, and make use of the development platform ofMapInfo/MapX geographical information system to complete whole function designof system.
