The intensive competition in manufacturing impels enterprises to reduce the cost, improve the quality and shrink the time of product development. To achieve these goals, the Concurrent Engineering(CE) is being applied in many companies. The Design For Assembly (DFA) is an important enabling technology in Concurrent Engineering. G. Boothroyd and P. Dewhurst of University of Massachusetts firstly gave this terminology when they applied a method to evaluate the performance of product assembly design. DFA evaluation method is still developing with the deep research of Concurrent Engineering. Taking full consideration of the factors effecting on product assembly design and satisfying the performance of product, DFA in Concurrent Engineering applies many techniques like analysis, evaluation, planning and simulation in the product development process to improve the quality of product assembly design and reduce the cost in the assembly process and the total cost of product.The dissertation is divided into six chapters and the detail contents are summarized as follows:Chapter one is introduction. The origin of DFA and the sufficient of traditional DFA evaluation method and DFA in Concurrent Engineering are discussed. The related research on this field in home and abroad is stated.Chapter two discusses the Concurrent Engineering, including the concept of CE, the sequential and concurrent product design process and the concept and measurement of concurrent degree. Based on these statements, the mode of concurrent product design is researched. A sample in the application of Concurrent Engineeringæ¡ŸONSENS is presented including the supporting platform and DFX tools.Chapter three deeply researches the product assembly model based on Concurrent Engineering. On the basis of these discussions, some methods of assembly modeling and the "Bottom-Up" and "Top-Down" design methods and process are researched. The product assembly modeling technique based on Concurrent Engineering is also researched.Chapter four discusses the facets of product assembly evaluation. Based on these statements, some methods and related algorithm are given. The effect of assembly tolerance on product assembly is researched in detail and the algorithm and program of total assembly cost is presented.Chapter five researches on the application of DFA method.The last Chapter is conclusion and outlook. The achievements of the dissertation are summarized, and the innovations are pointed. The future research works are put forward.
